Hardy "Casey" Croxton

Issues

I am writing to inform you that I will be a candidate for Judge in the May 20th county-wide nonpartisan election. After more than five years as a City Court and Special District Judge I will be seeking one of the four full-time positions that will be opening up in Benton County beginning January 2009. The Rogers District Court Judge will hear misdemeanor and traffic cases and will oversee smaller civil matters, which is what I have been doing for the last five years on a part-time basis. I have found the work to be rewarding and I have learned a lot about the administration of justice at the most basic and fundamental level. While caseloads have been steadily growing, time must still be taken to treat the parties with fairness and respect and to carefully consider the issues before the Court.

I pledge, if elected, to work diligently to reduce the ever growing amount of unpaid fines and fees. I recognize there are a number of our fellow citizens who suffer financial hardship and who, when faced with a fine for a traffic violation or minor crime, have difficulty making payment. I will be looking at enhancing the use of community service so the debt is paid and the community benefits. I will also sentence people to jail, but only when warranted. With some people, jail time is the only way to get them to hear the message that they must take responsibility for their actions. I have found that these individuals constitute only a small minority of the general public. When possible, I want to avoid having taxpayers foot the bill for someone to sit in jail. Jail space should be reserved for those that commit the more serious crimes.

I am writing you because I believe you are someone who cares about our county and our community and I would be honored to have your support and your vote. I believe you are someone whose opinion influences the opinion of others, and I would appreciate your help in getting others to consider voting for me. I am not soliciting, nor am I personally allowed to solicit campaign donations; if you are interested in that, you should contact Tom Donovan, Campaign Treasurer, at 636-5826, or the toll free number above.

Most importantly, I want to know your concerns and to hear whatever advice you may have. While the District Court does not handle the most serious of legal matters, more of our fellow citizens will come in contact with this Court than with any other. If those who appear in this Court are dealt with courteously and with respect, they will leave with more respect for the judicial system as a whole. I thought long and hard before making a decision to become a candidate. It is not to feed my ego, but to be of service to my fellow citizens. I want to put back a little more than I take away. If I am elected, and if I can have but one theme during my tenure, it will be that we all need to take responsibility for our actions and for our communities.

I truly thank you for your time and consideration.

“I appreciate your vote and your support.”

“Hello, I’m Tom Donovan, Campaign Treasurer; election campaigns can be expensive, especially since this year is the first time the District Judges are running county wide. We can always use your help and support, whether it is an offer to distribute material, solicit voter support, or to donate to the campaign.”
